2018 Honda Odyssey Safety Ratings

2018 Honda Odyssey

In the automotive industry, there’s two different groups that are regarded as the authority on vehicle safety: The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

When new models hit showrooms, the NHTSA and IIHS subject them to rigorous crash and road testing to determine exactly how safe they are.

The 2018 Honda Odyssey has the distinction of earning both a 5-Star Overall Safety Rating from the NHTSA,1 as well as a 2017 TOP SAFETY PICK+ ² from the IIHS when equipped with available Honda Sensing® and LED headlights.

With these safety ratings, you can rest assured that the Honda Odyssey has what it takes to protect you and your family.

A Strong Safety Structure

The Odyssey embodies safety, from top to bottom.

To start, it’s been designed with Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ (ACE™). ACE™ bodies employ front and rear crumple zones. These can both absorb collision forces, as well as rebuff them.

This body is then lined with multiple advanced airbags, including the intelligent-deploying SmartVent® airbags. SmartVent® provides added side protection to occupants sitting up front.

Honda Odyssey Safety Technology

Honda Odyssey

The crux of the Honda Odyssey safety array seems to be its technology. It comes with several features, both standard and optional, to improve its protective abilities.

Standard Vehicle Stability Assist™ (VSA®) and Traction Control

One of the keys to staying safe out on the road is to maintain control at all times, which is much easier with VSA® and the Traction Control system.

These features pair together to reduce unnecessary wheel-spin and increase your overall tire grip. That way, you can remain on the road, even when conditions are bad.

Standard Multi-Angle Rearview Camera with Guidelines

For some drivers (even seasoned drivers), parking can be something of a challenge. Fortunately, it’s not nearly as difficult when you have the Multi-Angle Rearview Camera with Guidelines.

This feature not only shows you what’s behind your car, but it also provides guides to help you get safely into a parking spot.

Available Honda Sensing®

Honda Sensing® is perhaps the most impressive suite in the Honda Odyssey. It utilizes small cameras and sensors to not just monitor the road around you, but to autonomously respond to imminent hazards. Its features include (but are not limited to):

  • Adaptive Cruise Control
  • Lane Departure Warning: Advanced sensors monitor the vehicle’s travel and provide audible and visual alerts should the vehicle veer out of its lane without signaling.
  • Blind Spot Monitoring: This system alerts drivers if the vehicle detects an obstacle in the minivan’s blind spot.
  • Forward Collision Alert: The forward collision warning system alerts the driver if it senses a vehicle or obstacle approaching too quickly, allowing the driver to take appropriate evasive action.
  • Honda LaneWatch: When the right turn signal is engaged a small camera displays the view of the area to the right of the vehicle on the center console screen, alerting drivers to potential hazards they may not otherwise see.
