How Honda Safety Ratings Work

Honda safetySafety ratings are given by two organizations, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), which base their ratings on crash test results.

The NHTSA performs tests in four areas: Overall, Frontal Crash, Side Crash, and Rollover. They award vehicles with a rating out of five on each of these tests, and also provide recommendations for safety technology upgrades. Vehicles that perform well, like the 2017 Honda Civic, gained a 5-Star Overall Safety Rating.1

The IIHS tests the vehicle’s crash worthiness through five different tests, including the roof strength and head restraints. They also test crash avoidance features, headlights, and child seat anchors.

The models that receive the highest marks in IIHS tests are awarded a TOP SAFETY PICK or the coveted TOP SAFETY PICK+ rating.

Other Honda Safety Features

In addition to discussing the safety ratings the Honda vehicles on our lot have achieved, our reviews will include breakdowns of all the features inside the car that help to keep you safe.

safe Honda vehiclesThis includes passive safety, like airbags and crumple zones. We also discuss active safety and collision mitigation features, like Honda Sensing®, which comes standard with many Honda vehicles, and includes, among other features:

  • Collision Mitigation Braking System™ (CMBS™)
  • Road Departure Mitigation System
  • Adaptive Cruise Control

In fact, the forward collision warning system (CMBS™) played a part in winning the Honda CR-V the 2017 TOP SAFETY PICK+ distinction from the IIHS, so this is absolutely something to watch for when deciding on your next car.2
