The Hilly Hundred Bike Ride
Looking for a fun fall activity around Bloomington, Columbus, and Ellettsville, Indiana? If you enjoy physical activity and being outdoors, then the Hilly Hundred Bike Ride is a great activity for you.
Come see what this event is all about.
The History of the Ride
On June 15 and 16 of 1968, the Southern Indiana Bicycle Touring Association decided to host their first Hilly Hundred Bike Ride.
This first event saw only 54 riders, one of which was a single sprocket, balloon-tired bike. Named for the hills that bikers have to climb up and down, this ride is known for the spectacular views it provides at each summit.
Times have changed since that initial ride, but the spirit of this event has never died down. As news of the picturesque ride spread, this event grew. By 1982, they saw 2,811 riders. Now, there is a rider limit of 5,000 bicyclists.
Despite this race going strong for over half a century, little has changed. Roads are more paved and are safer for riders, but you can still experience the original, challenging yet fun route. Now held in the fall, you’ll be able to take in the changing colors of autumn as you cruise around Indiana.
Since the Hilly Hundred is held so close to Halloween, they also hold an annual costume contest. Dress up in your best and most creative outfit and wear it to the first rest stop. From there, your picture will be taken, and you’ll automatically be entered into the contest!
Volunteer for the Hilly Hundred
Not a rider? You can also volunteer at the Hilly Hundred! Their event is run by about 400 volunteers and can only run smoothly with your help. Reach out to their team members today to learn more about how you can get involved.
When Is the Hilly Hundred Bike Ride?
